It appears that breaking big records is what the little 25 year old Argentinian is best at. Lionel Messi has just been awarded the coveted world player the year for an unprecedented 4th time making him the first player in history to achieve this feat. The votes could easily have gone to either Cristiano Ronaldo or Andres Iniesta but with a record breaking
( That would be Gerrard Mullers 40 year old record) 91 goals in one calendar year. Just to put this in context, the only two other players to put their hand on this accolade 3 times in their career are Mr R 9 Ronaldo and Zenidine Zidane.
There definitely is an argument to say Messi is yet to prove himself at numerous clubs and leagues as did Ronaldo and Zidane but breaking the most goals scored In a calendar year along with scoring the most goals in a champions league Match and in the 2011-2012 champions league campaign left little doubt in the judges mind.
Though clearly taking in the significance of his 4th award Messi was quick to thank his team mates and the coaching staff members that have worked with him in the past. Ronaldo and Iniesta are definitely world class in their own right and the Portuguese Ronaldo will no doubt get better and the competition between these two will continue to leave us at the edge of our seats. Ronaldo had arguably one of the best seasons of his career also holding records of his own. Ronaldo will come back stronger but for the year 2011- 2012, the biggest star was little Messi.
